FireMemorials.com Up And Running

FireMemorials.com

FireMemorials.com is a national database of Fire and EMS related Memorials and Museums. The idea behind the project was to provide information on as many permanent memorials and museums as possible to people looking for information throughout the United States. The site (www.firememorials.com) helps to preserve these important pieces of history.

Visitors are provided with information on the history of the memorial and the event that it commemorates. They are also provided with a list of additional resources, the physical address of the memorial, and pictures of the memorial whenever possible. Visitors are encouraged to submit information on memorials or museums in their own areas in order to make the site as complete as possible.

This site started as a personal project. While researching some memorials for a short article I wanted to write, I was having trouble finding the type of information that I was looking for. Mainly, I was looking for locations of specific monuments. Internet searches for specific memorials would give me a piece of information here and a piece there. There was no one site that could provide information on more than two or three memorials. Thus, FireMemorials.com was born.

I registered the name a few days later and began working on the design. The site launched on April 10th, 2008, four months after being conceived. On the day the site launched, there were 164 listings and nearly 100 more waiting to be added. Since then, visitors have already begun to submit new memorials.

In addition to the monuments and memorials, "This Day in Fire History" was added to the front page. This interesting "gadget" (using google's term) lists historic and interesting facts about fire and the history of the Fire Service worldwide. Included are facts such as the patenting of the first automatic sprinkler system in the U.S. and even such fun facts as the Door's "Light My Fire" hitting number 1 on the charts.

Each memorial is entered manually, in order to ensure appropriate formatting and content. Each entry is as valued as the memorial itself. Because of this practice, there are roughly five new entries added each week.

As a career firefighter and paramedic, I take pride in helping preserve the history of the Fire Service. I encourage everyone to visit my site and have a look around. There is a tremendous amount of interesting history. I also encourage visitors to contact me with comments, suggestions, or additions. Feedback is greatly appreciated and any contributions will be credited to the appropriate people unless they ask to remain unnamed.

Thank you for your time, enjoy my site, and be safe.
