As Sony’s global switcher sales reach 6,700 units, European broadcasters adopt latest MVS-8000G series

Apr 14, 2008: From newsrooms and studios to High Definition outside broadcast vehicles, live production professionals choose performance and flexibility of Sony’s latest multi-format switcher.

NAB 2008, Las Vegas, April 14-17

As a growing number of organisations invest in Sony’s MVS-8000G series, including the UK’s BBC News for the next phase of its operations at Newscentre in London, Sony today revealed how Europe’s live production community is increasingly benefiting from the efficiencies of its latest addition the switcher portfolio.

The installation of three MVS-8000G switchers into the new multimedia newsroom of BBC News is intended to support the broadcaster’s strategy for all productions to be in High Definition by 2012. Each capable of being configured with up to four mix effects banks, 80 inputs and 56 assignable outputs, Sony’s MVS-8000G switchers combine optional internal format converters, colour correction and eight channel frame memory system to give operators superior processing power for complex live production applications.

A similar upgrade to HD production is also taking place at the UK's BBC Resources' studio 4, which is home to some of the UK's most popular TV programmes, including A Question of Sport and the award winning Jonathan Ross Show. The organisation is now being equipped with an MVS-8000 series 4ME switcher, with separate 3 and 1ME control panels as part of the investment.

In the Netherlands, outside broadcast specialist Cinevideogroup has just finished building two new OB units, each featuring an MVS-8000G switcher. For use at large-scale concerts and international sport events, Sony’s multi-format live production switcher is at the heart of the largest-ever truck built for the country, measuring 16.5 x 5.5 metres. “As one of the many significant studio and outside broadcast customers in Europe since the series launch at NAB last year, Cinevideogroup is indicative of the European wide popularity of the MVS-8000G switcher,” explained European Product Manager at Sony Professional Solutions Europe, Andy Hotten. “Broadcasters and producers have to keep up with consumers’ demand for increasingly sophisticated content and it is here that the MVS-8000G switcher has succeeded, due to its multi-format compatibility and flexibility that suits the widest possible range of live production applications.”

Elsewhere in the Europe, companies such as Ireland’s TV Mobiles or Italy’s Videe have also invested in Sony’s MVS-8000G switcher for their latest HD OB trucks. In Turkey, the country’s first HD OB vehicle has been designed for Digiturk with an MVS-8000G switcher and many other leading broadcasters nationwide are following suit. Switchers have been installed at: ATV, one of Turkey’s most important private TV stations; NTV, Turkey’s largest news channel; Imaj, the biggest post production house in Turkey and one of the biggest in Europe; and Turkish Parliament TV.

“The MVS-8000G is proving to give broadcasters in a broad range of live production environments a flexible path to HD production, which is reliable, fast and efficient,” concluded Sony’s Andy Hotten.
